"Memoirs of a geisha" by Arthur Golden 「（邦題）さゆり」を読み終わりました。
とてもよく調査されているためか、全く違和感なく本の世界を楽しめました。
ちょっと抜書きを。

(まめは)"......Those of us with water in our personalities don't pick where we'll flow to.
All we can do is flow where the landscape of our lives carries us."
(ちよ)"I suppose I'm like a river that has come up against a dam, and
that dam is Hatsumomo."
(まめは)"Yes, probably that's true," she said, looking at me calmly.
(まめは)"But rivers sometimes wash dams away."
・・・運命は大きな力で決められている。しかし、（望めば）道を切り開くことは出来る。

(まめは)"Neither you nor I can know your destiny. You may never know it!
Destiny isn't always like a party at the end of the evening. Sometimes it's nothing
more than struggling through life from day to day."
(ちよ)"But, Mameha-san, how cruel!"
(まめは)"Yes, it is cruel," she said. "But none of us can escape destiny."
・・・運命とは時に残酷であるが、運命からは逃れることが出来ない。

(チェアマン)"You seemed so desperate, like you might drown if someone didn't
save you. After Pumpkin told me you'd intended that encounter for Nobu's eyes,
I made up my mind to tell him what I'd seen. And when he reacted so angrily...
well, if he couldn't forgive you for what you'd done, it was clear to me he was
never truly your destiny."
・・・運命の人とは、どんなことが有っても赤い糸で結ばれている。なんかこの句を思い出しました。
「瀬をはやみ岩にせかるる滝川の　われても末に逢はむとぞ思う」 by 崇徳院

いや～、映画では分からなかったことがすっきりしました。
もう一度映画を見てみると味が分かるやも知れません。この原作、かなりお勧めです。
女性はしたたかに、しなやかに、たくましく生きて行くべし!・・・などと改めて思ったのでありました。
